after, possibilities were sought to speedup the freight
transport along the Lahn.

step-by-step construction of the Lahntalbahn between Lahnstein and Bad Ems was
started. Due to the enormous economical significance of this route, the
constuction between Lahnstein and Wetzlar was pushed by the railway engineer
Moritz Hilf and completedin sections until 1863. The strategically benefical
position along the railway route Berlin - Metz was the main reasonfor the double
tracked construction of the Lahntalbahn, as part of the "canon railway", in the
late 19th century Despite the destruction and demounting of the route at the end
of World War II and closedowns in recent years, the double track route is stll
drivable for the most parts and in frequent use in transportation and normal
traffic. The heydays of the route in the 1960ies and 1970ies, characterized by
freight- and longdistance-traffic, are long past, the Lahntal now is a quiet and

station buildings show a striking picture form the good old times, a little
